Lighters with a Piëzo ignition

The Piëzo ignition is developed in the early ’70. The system is a maintenance free quartz ignition that, dependent on quality, sparks 15.000 till 50.000 times.
The Piëzo system contains two parts, both holding quartz elements. These two parts are jammed together by a spring mechanism (piezo system) which produce an electronic discharge a spark. The jamming of the two parts creates a clicking noise.
De Piëzo ignition system is the easiest system in use. In only one movement you can light the lighter. This system is used in all gas lighters (turbo-, Jetflame lighters) except in the flint lighters.
Lighters with a flint ignition

The first fire ever created by man was thanks to the flints. In the Stone ages Caveman created fire by hitting two flints to each other that created sparks to set fire on dry leaves.
To light most of the flint lighters you first need to open the cap before igniting. This ignition is used for igniting as well as gas- as for petrol lighters. By opening the cap the gas starts floating out of the lighter. By turning the flint wheel, a spark will ignite the gas.
Turbo lighters

The Turbo lighter saw its first light in Japan. The Japanese lighter manufacturer Windmill lanced the first Turbo lighter in 1989. Several brands like Charmant followed soon.
In the Turbo burner is a gas pressure chamber. The gas is stowed trough microscopic small holes into a special pressure chamber. In this chamber the gas is mixed with oxygen and creates a wide flame. On top of the pressure chamber is a special platinum filament that preserves heat.
The advantage of the Turbo lighter is that because of the filament the flame will not be blown out by the wind. It’s ideal for outdoors activities and is therefor also known as the all weather lighter or storm lighter. The filament is a very delicate part of the light and deters easily when it gets dirty. It is therefore highly recommended to never touch this part with any kind of material.
Jetflame lighters

The First Yet Flame lighters saw its first light in the ’90. It is recognised by its pointed blue extremely hot flame.
The Yet flame has the same kind of pressure chamber as the turbo lighter. Only the mixture of the gas and oxygen is different and the gas is stowed in a sharper triangle shape. Because of this different method a concentrated and much hotter flame is accurse, then a Turbo-lighter or conventional lighter. The flame heath reaches temperatures of 1.800C easily.
Because the extreme heat of the Yet Flame it is often used for lighting cigars.
Lighter Techniques
WARNING: When you start to refill your lighter, make sure you do this in a ventilated room free of open fire or sparks. If you feel that after reading this guide you’re not able to refill your lighter, please contact your local specialist for a demonstration.
Gas-lighters

Buy a refill-gas-can at your local Tobacco-shop. We advise always to use the Ronson Multi-fill gas can. This because its standard filler valve fits 95 % of all lighter. It also contains the right quality Butane gas.
- Turn your lighter so that the inlet valve is facing up. Hold the lighter so that you cannot ignite the lighter while filling it.
- If necessary you can de-air your lighter. To do this you need to push the inlet valve with a small screwdriver. You’ll hear a sizzling noise. After a few seconds the noise will nearly stop and the lighter is completely empty and cold. These are the best condition to refill your lighter.
- Now you can start re-filling your lighter. Place the filler valve of the gas-can on the centre part of the inlet valve of your lighter. Now you gently, but firmly press the gas-can on the inlet valve of the lighter and hold it for approx. 5 seconds and the release it.
- Your lighter is now been re-filled with gas. For your own safety we advise to check if the lighter is leaking. Please note that most of the lighters have an overpressure valve. So it is normal if you hear a sizzling noise for one or two seconds. In case you keep hear the gas escape, DO NOT IGNITE YOUR LIGHTER! We advise you to go to you local Tobacco-shop for inspection.
- Adjust the flame-height to its lowest and wait about 30 seconds before igniting your lighter. This way all spilled gas can evaporate.
- Turn the lighter away from your face and ignite it. If necessary adjust the flame-height to your own preference.
Petrol Lighters

Always use a can of Lighter fluid. Ronson’s Rosonal is highly appreciated and very often used.
- Turn the screw of the lighter loose or pull out the insert of the lighter. Either way you’ll find cotton.
- Turn the lighter up side down so the liquid can flow on the cotton. Put the nozzle of the can on the cotton.
- Gently squeeze the can so liquid start poring on the cotton until the liquid is fully penetrated into the cotton.
- Assemble the lighter and wipe the lighter and your hands clean from any spilled fluids. Wait several minutes to let the fuel evaporate.
